Virginia Can Use Familial DNA Searching for Criminal Investigations

On Monday, March 21, 2011, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced that the Virginia Department of Forensic Science has the capability and is allowed to perform familial DNA searches. Familial DNA Searching has sometimes been perceived to be a controversial approach to identify and find violent offenders that some states have shunned because of privacy or fairness concerns.  But in a news release Gov. McDonnell stated: "It is vital that our law enforcement agencies have every available tool at their disposal to protect public safety and investigate the most violent crimes in the commonwealth [and] familial DNA searching, which must be used cautiously and sparingly, provides another important tool to assist law enforcement in some of their most difficult and heinous cases where the safety of the public remains a concern."
