Familial DNA Search Leads to Second Arrest in California

In Santa Cruz, California, law enforcement arrested Elvis Lorenzo Garcia, a 21 year old man, for an attack on a 24 year old Santa Cruz coffee shop employee in 2008. Garcia is being charged with robbery, sodomy, sexual penetration by force and false imprisonment and he is been held in lieu of $1 million bail.

In November 2008, law enforcement sent biological evidence from the crime scene to the state Department of Justice laboratory to try to match it with other suspects' DNA. In November 2010, DNA from one of Garcia's relatives matched DNA taken from the coffee shop, police said - which was a major break in the case. After an investigation, police quickly ruled out Garcia's relative who was not identified by authorities and kept a close watch on Garcia from November 2010 to January 2011. On March 10, 2011, police obtained arrest and search warrants for Garcia and arrested him at his workplace.
