New York Public Officials Call for Mandatory DNA Fingerprinting for Violent Felonies

Prosecutors and Senator Charles Schumer of New York said that a law making DNA fingerprinting mandatory for people arrested for violent felonies would go a long way in preventing recidivism.  Currently, 23 states use DNA to identify people arrested for violent crimes.  On January 11th, Senator Schumer visited Syracuse to push for passage of a bill that would require mandatory DNA fingerprinting for those accused of violent crimes in the state. The bill would provide funding for the state to increase the size of their database. Schumer also claims the bill would save money by helping police avoid following false leads.
