North Carolina DNA Database Yields Record Number of Hits in 2010

From January 1, 2010 to October 31, 2010, searches through the DNA Database maintained by the State Bureau of Investigation Lab (SBI) have resulted in 379 hits.  "North Carolina's investment in using DNA technology to fight crime continues to pay off," Attorney General Roy Cooper said. Law enforcement expects that number to rise beginning February 1, 2011, because law enforcement will be permitted to collect DNA samples using cheek swabs from people arrested for certain serious felonies and misdemeanors.  Before the bill became law earlier this year, opposition from the ACLU and other civil rights groups were successful in making some changes. One requirement is that the SBI lab destroy the DNA profile and data of people whose charges are dismissed or who are not convicted.
