The 21st International Symposium on Human Identification will be held October 11 - 14 in San Antonio, Texas. The Conference organized by Promega, will have presentations from world renowned legal and forensic experts and law enforcement agents on aspects of DNA analysis. There will be an expert panel who will discuss the positive and negative aspects of familial searches. The practice of familial searches has been widely used in the United Kingdom since 2002. Just recently in July 2010 in California the serial rapist and murderer, "The Grim Sleeper", was found through a familial search (through his son's DNA). Some experts have calculated that familial searching could increase the yield of investigative leads by at least 40 percent. But other experts fear it could be a form of racial profiling.
