New York State Would Be The First To Take DNA From All Criminals

On June 1, 2010, Gov. David Paterson announced, that he is introducing a bill that would require everyone convicted of a penal law crime to provide a DNA sample. Paterson remarked that New York state collects DNA from only 46 percent of the criminals convicted of penal law crimes. This new legislation would require everyone convicted of a penal law offense, as well as youthful offenders and sex offenders, to submit a DNA sample.  Studies have shown that many offenders of minor crimes go on to commit rape or murder or can be linked to previous felonies.
