On January 6, 1984, police were dispatched to Mrs. Elsie Mae Deem's home in Forth Worth, TX. The 82-year-old woman had been hit repeatedly in the head and raped inside her home. Mrs. Deem was taken to a local hospital where she died on January 30th from blunt force trauma to the head.
In 2008, the cold case unit requested that several items be processed for DNA. In March 2011, the cold case detective received a report that a DNA profile had been obtained. After it was entered into CODIS in July of 2011 it obtained a "hit". The DNA profile matched a prisoner who was currently serving time for drug possession: James L. Sanders, 57.  Sanders had previously served time in prison when he pleaded guilty to attempted rape of a 17-year-old girl in December, 1977.  Investigators also suspect that Sanders is responsible for a February 1989 attempted-murder at a bar.
